Interviewer: Today I'm interviewing Prof. Michael Useem, Faculty Director of the Leadership Center of McNulty Leadership Program, Wharton School, and William and Jacalyn Egan Professor Emeritus of Management, University of Pennsylvania, USA. The subject of the interview is selecting a board leader and the role of a board leader. Listeners are expected to have read the article by Dennis Carey, Ram Charan, Joseph Griesedieck, and Michael Useem titled Eight Questions to Ask Before Selecting a New Board Leader, published in Harvard Business Review on 17th of January 2023 before listening to this interview. Prof. Useem, thank you for sparing the time. May I start by checking, for the international audience, the meaning of board leader. Is this an exclusively US term or does it have an accepted international meaning? Is it correct that the board leader may be the chair of the board of directors but need not be. That he's never the CEO and that while there is a board leader, a CEO may also be the chair of the board of directors.
