Interviewer: Today, I'm interviewing Professor Deirdre McCloskey, Distinguished Professor of Economics, History, English, and Communication, emerita, at University of Illinois at Chicago, USA. She is the author of "Prudence Over Sustainability," published in Project Syndicate on 1st of October, 2021, the content of which is the subject of this interview. Listeners are expected to have read the article before listening to this interview. Professor McCloskey, thank you for sparing the time to speak today. In your biography, you describe yourself as, "Literary, quantitative, postmodern, free-market, progressive-Episcopalian, ex-Marxist, Midwestern woman from Boston who was a man. Not conservative. I'm a Christian classical liberal." How do any or all of those components of who you perceive yourself to be contribute to the judgment calls you make and the opinions you express in the article? Given your confidence in human technological ingenuity, what happens when scientists enable a future generation to prevent death due to age? Prof. McCloskey: Yeah, well, I think that as a Christian or a Jew or Hindu or almost anything else, we owe an obligation to the poor of the world. If we pursue sustainability in, I have to say, a somewhat sloppy way, that people use the word imprudently,
