Interviewer: Today, I'm interviewing Professor Shang-Jin Wei on his article of 4th of January, 2023, published in Project Syndicate, titled "Can China Save Its Economic Miracle?" Professor Wei is N.T. Wang Professor of Chinese Business and Economy and Professor of Finance and Economics at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business and School of International and Public Affairs. A link to Professor Wei's full biography accompanies this interview. Listeners are expected to have read the article before listening to the interview. Professor Wei, thank you for sparing the time. In your article, you suggest that the Chinese government must create confidence in consumers, and you suggest some ways it could do so. You suggest that it must focus on increasing per capita income, and improving the quality of life, should increase the average education level of its workforce, and may have to allow a more permissive policy environment to encourage entrepreneurship. If the Chinese government seeks to manage an entrepreneurial business environment, my questions are these. What does it really want to achieve? What will it do to achieve its objectives? Can it succeed? In short, are its tools and methods compatible with its objectives?
