Interviewer: Today, I'm speaking to Professor Joseph Nye, Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus and former Dean of Harvard School of Governance. He has held many important positions in US administrations and was recently identified in a survey of international scholars as the most influential scholar on American foreign policy. The subject to this interview is the USA and the Asian triangle. Professor Nye, in a Project Syndicate article in February 2021 entitled "Biden's Asian Triangle", you drew attention to the importance of the America-Japan Alliance. First, let me ask, why did you write the article, When you did? And what did you wish to achieve? Prof. Nye: Well, I wrote the article because there's a good deal of talk in Washington, but also around the world about the fact that the new Biden administration is going to focus on Asia and particularly on China. In that sense, I wanted to bring people up to speed on where Biden's plans fit in with its predecessor, the Trump administration, but also the plans of prior administration before that. For that, I think it's important to go back to the Clinton administration, where the basic framework of the US-Japan Alliance was reaffirmed. That was a simple reaffirmation of what you might call realism.
