Interviewer: I'm speaking to Professor Larry Diamond, who's a professor by courtesy of Political Science and Sociology at Stanford University, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education, and senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, where he coordinates the democracy program in the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law. Today is the 25th of January 2021. I'm interested in the implications - for business people - in functioning democracies, of the analysis he put forward in his paper: 'Facing Up to the Democratic Recession'. It was published in the Journal of Democracy in January 2015. Professor Diamond, a lot has happened since 2015. Let me start by asking you to summarize the conclusions of your paper, and whether the past five years have confirmed or challenged your analysis. Prof. Diamond: Thank you. Unfortunately, the last five years have confirmed and extended my argument that the world is in a democratic recession. That political rights and civil liberties are moving backwards in the world, that more countries are moving away from democracy rather than toward democracy, and that there is a march toward illiberal populism that is sweeping
