Interviewer: Today, I'm interviewing Associate Professor Beth Humberd, Manning School of Business, University of Massachusetts Lowell, USA, on how to delegate effectively. We'll be taking as our starting point Professor Humberd's article, written with Scott Latham, published in MIT Sloan Review on 29th of February 2024 titled How To Delegate More Effectively: Four Approaches. Listeners are expected to have read the article before listening to this interview. Professor Humberd, thank you for sparing the time. May I start by asking, in your article, decision in the singular or plural form is often used. But there is no use of the word authority. Is this just due to writing style, or does it indicate something significant in your analysis? Secondly, in the article, you illustrate the four scenarios by reference to top management. Are the approaches you advocate equally relevant at all levels of management in a large company? Professor Humberd. Dr. Humberd: Thank you for having me, Neil. I'll start with your first question around the use of the word decision and the lack of use of the word authority. On the one hand, I would say that's partially stylistic. But I also think it's a conceptually important distinction.
