Interviewer: Today I'm interviewing Professor Jill Perry-Smith. Professor of Organization and Management, Senior Associate Dean, Strategic Initiatives, at Goizueta Business School, Emory University. Professor Perry-Smith is the author of, "How Collaboration Needs Change From Mind to Marketplace", in the Winter 2022 MIT Sloan Management Review. Listeners are expected to have read the article prior to listening to this interview. Professor Perry-Smith, thank you for sparing the time for this interview. May I start with these three questions? One, how do you define collaborative innovation? Two, what was the size of the organization you had in mind when you were structuring the article? Three, what are the attributes of your ideal innovation manager? Prof. Perry-Smith: Thank you for having me. I am delighted to have a chance to talk about the article a little bit more in-depth, and I'll happily answer the first question. The way I think of collaborative creativity is the idea that in order to be creative, we cannot do that in a vacuum. We are either influenced by our conversations and interactions with others, we either benefit from the social capital and skills of others to advance our ideas, or we work in concert with others to execute our ideas.
