Interviewer: Today, I'm interviewing Prof. Sylvie Albert, professor in the Department of Business and Administration at the University of Winnipeg, on the book Implementing Sustainable Cities, of which she is a joint editor together with Jeremy Millard and Manish Pandey, published in September 2024 by Routledge. Listeners are expected to have read at least some of the book's chapters before listening to this interview. Prof. Albert, thank you for sparing the time. Let me start with a fundamental question. Large cities are a relatively recent phenomenon in human evolution. Is there any certainty that they can be made sustainable in the way the designation 'sustainable' is used in the book? Is it perhaps just an assumption that they can be and that we should all just make a jolly good attempt to make them sustainable? Prof. Albert. Prof. Albert: Thank you for the question. Certainly, the movement toward large cities means that we must find ways to make them more livable and sustainable. When large cities such as Mexico City with a population of 22 million, or Barcelona with 5.7 million, or Los Angeles with 3.8 million, are sharing some of their ideas to become more sustainable, I think it gives me hope that, yes, we can do something with our large cities, but we must start.
