Interviewer: Professor Sabine Eichinger, thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview with us today to discuss the phenomenon by which COVID-19 vaccines have produced a few reports of severe blood clotting adverse reactions so far. First and foremost, are clotting complications known adverse events of vaccines in general, are these reported cases something completely new, or are these specifically related to the new COVID vaccines (i.e. to the new technology of nucleic acid vaccines)? Prof. Eichinger: Thank you very much for the invitation. So far we have only observed these clotting side-effects with two COVID-19 vaccines, the AstraZeneca vaccine and the Johnson & Johnson Janssen vaccine. There are no reports on other vaccines about these kinds of blood-clotting side-effects which we have observed with these two vector vaccinations. Interviewer: Can you provide a bit more context as to these vaccine-related adverse events? How often do they happen in relation to the total number of inoculations? Prof. Eichinger: These are definitely very rare events. The exact number is still unknown particularly also because of the different vaccination programs between countries.
