My name is Mike Rathbone. Today, I'm going to give you an introduction to the theory and applications of controlled release principles. This presentation was compiled by myself and Diviya Santhanes.

This presentation will start with the definition of a controlled release product. It will then go on to give an introduction to controlled release drug delivery by looking at the advantages and disadvantages of formulating a drug into a controlled release product. Later in the presentation, the theory of a controlled release product will be over-viewed and some of the formulation approaches and their mechanisms of release will be examined. Now, controlled release products can be found in many fields. Towards the end of this presentation, we will show you some applications of controlled release products. This will include controlled release products used in both the human and veterinary fields.

A simplified definition for a controlled release product is a dosage form, which is designed to release a drug at a predetermined rate for a prolonged period of time. This process is a deliberate act on the part of the formulator, through prudent selection of ingredients and/or physical design, to control the rate of release of the drug from the depths each form, for periods far longer than immediate release products exhibit. Controlled release products are available for all routes of drug delivery and can be developed for human use, animal use and consumer and diversified uses, including agriculture.
