Interviewer: Today, I'm interviewing Dr. Paul Schoemaker, author, entrepreneur, and former professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, USA, on his article How To Make Scenario Planning Stick, written jointly with Shardul S. Phadnis, and published on 9th of December 2025 in MIT Sloan Review. A link to Dr. Schoemaker's professional biography accompanies this interview. Listeners are expected to have read the article before listening. Dr. Schoemaker, thank you for sparing the time. May I start by inquiring about the significance of the article's title? Is the implication that most scenario planning doesn't stick? If that is the case, why is it so? Dr. Schoemaker. Prof. Schoemaker: Thank you, Neil, for the invitation, and yes, that is a fair inference of the title, although not the only way to interpret the title. I could imagine some people who do scenario planning well, and they wouldn't necessarily read it. But there are a lot of people who do scenario planning, and so they would probably want it to stick. In my experience, having done this both academically and at Royal Dutch Shell where I took a long sabbatical in their scenario planning group, but also in the consulting firm, where we did hundreds of these scenario planning projects, the overall challenge was that there are usually a few champions in favor of scenario planning if the organization hasn't done it.
