Today I'm interviewing Dr. Danie du Plessis, Chair of the board of directors of the Medical Affairs Professional Society, colloquially known as MAPS, about what medical affairs is, what the Society does, and how it goes about its mission. Dr. du Plessis is an MD with two masters, one in clinical pharmacology and the other in MBA. Dr. du Plessis, thank you for sparing the time for this interview. May we start with two basic questions? What is medical affairs? And what does the Medical Affairs Professional Society do? What is its purpose? How does it set and pursue its objectives. Dr. du Plessis. Dr. du Plessis: Great, thank you very much, first of all, for the invitation, and thank you for the questions. Those two questions might keep us busy for a really long time potentially. Let's start with what is medical affairs? There's a variety of definitions and it has changed over the last 30 years or so that I've been in the industry. It was a support function to help commercial. Then it became a communication function to make sure that the data is shared outside. It's been referred to as a bridge between R&D and commercial.
