Hello, I am Gina Touch Mercer, PhD, psychologist and director of the behavioral and social sciences curriculum at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Phoenix. Welcome to part two of the talk on healthy human development across the lifespan. As part of the Behavioral Medicine Series.

Part one included explanations of the major psychosocial concepts and key theories of human development and their applications to infants, children and adolescents. Today I will resume the discussion of healthy human development across the lifespan highlighting the major theories and concepts with widest applications focusing on all stages of adult development. I will again offer several patient examples to illustrate the major concepts and theories of human development and highlight the relevance to general medical practice, research and several medical specialties.

Our learning objectives for the talk called part two of the talk on healthy human development across the lifespan are, number one, to understand and apply theories and foundational concepts of human development to patient examples across the lifespan with the focus on all stages of adult development. Number two, to articulate several developmental influences that physicians, researchers and all healthcare providers should consider and address to enhance patient health outcomes. Number three, to identify specific physician behaviors and communication that promote positive patient, family, physician relationships and in turn, impact patient health.
