Hello, everyone. My name is Maggie Han and I'm joined by Schantel Williams.
We are both from the Renal Research Institute which is located in New York City.
Today, we'll be speaking to you a bit about Pervasive Sensing in Chronic Kidney Disease.
0:24
Through an outline of our talk today, first,
we will be talking about pervasive sensing,
what it is, and its application.
Then we will talk about how we use pervasive sensing
in our physical activity and sleep monitoring studies in hemodialysis patients.
Then finally, we will talk about how the parameters that can be
collected by pervasive sensing can be fed into precision medicine.
0:56
What is pervasive sensing?
Well, it's sensing that can take place anytime and anywhere.
This sensing is done by
a miniaturized sensor network that can be either
worn on the body or integrated into the living environment.
Most importantly, this sensor of networks should not affect a person's daily routine.

With the rise of smartphones, bluetooth, low-power,
and microchip processing, the wearables market has boomed in recent years.
1:31
The global wearable device unit shipment forecast
between 2015 and 2020 is that it's expected
to grow at a 22 percent compounded annual rate.
The majority of that market consists of smartwatches,
fitness band, and other activity trackers.
