Biography
Jahar Bhattacharya is Professor of Medicine and Professor of Physiology & Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he also serves as Director of Lung Research. A graduate of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, he earned a DPhil from the University of Oxford before completing postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco.
His research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), with particular interests in lung inflammation, endothelial barrier function, cell-to-cell communication, and mitochondrial biology. Dr. Bhattacharya has led an NIH-funded research program for more than three decades, received numerous prestigious awards for his scientific contributions, and has mentored many investigators who have gone on to successful academic careers.
