Breathing is a fundamental life process that delivers oxygen to tissues and removes carbon dioxide. Its control is exceptionally adaptable, constantly tuned to meet our body's changing needs. Breathing automatically adjusts in response to exercise, sleep, speaking, and emotional states. This precise control relies on specialized sensors and controllers in the brain stem. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for appreciating normal physiology and recognizing how diseases can disrupt these vital functions. Breathing regulation centers are in the brainstem. The medulla oblongata has the central pattern generator, setting basic breathing rhythm by synchronizing respiratory muscles. The dorsal respiratory group stimulates inspiration, while the ventral group modulates both inspiration and expiration during increased demand.
