The following session will cover nutrition during pregnancy within the context of this subject, focusing on the essentials of optimal nutrition during pregnancy, including changes in energy and nutrient requirements, and how a balanced diet supports maternal and fetal health. We will discuss the roles of key macronutrients and micronutrients, the importance of supplements, and managing hydration and common pregnancy symptoms. Guidelines for safe eating, foods and substances to avoid, and considerations for special diets will be addressed. Finally, we'll examine healthy weight gain targets and the long term impacts of maternal nutrition on both mother and child. Today, we explore the essentials of nutrition during pregnancy, a period marked by remarkable physiological changes. A well balanced diet supports maternal health and optimizes fetal development. Nutritional requirements change significantly. Additional calories are needed, but also careful selection of nutrients. Choices made during pregnancy influence short term well being and may have lifelong impacts on growth, metabolism, and disease risk. Energy needs rise during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, with women requiring about 300 additional kilocalories daily, though this varies. Protein demands increase to approximately 1.1 grams/kilogram of body weight to support maternal tissue and fetal growth. Healthy fats, particularly Omega threes, aid brain and retinal development.
