Summary
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is the multi-dimensional neurovascular interface between the central nervous system (CNS) and the rest of the body. With an immense surface area, it functions as a gate-keeper to the CNS, preventing easy passage of substances that may endanger the homeostasis of the milieu.... read more
Unfortunately, the BBB may hinder the delivery of many substances to the brain and spinal cord that might improve neurodegenerative, ischemic and traumatic disorders of the CNS. Yet the dogma of the BBB providing a static barrier has been shattered by the demonstration of saturable transport systems into the CNS for many substances including some ingestive peptides, cytokines and neurotrophins.
This series of talks will explain the composition of the BBB, how it functions and how it might be manipulated to facilitate treatment of CNS disorders.
