Hello, my name is Oscar Yanes, I'm the scientific coordinator of CIBERDEM, which is the Spanish National Network for the Study of Diabetes, and I'm an assistant professor at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona, Spain. The title of my talk is "Metabolomics, and the importance of Experimental Design to Data Acquisition".

This slide shows a summary of the critical steps for un- targeted metabolomics workflow, starting from experimental design, sample preparation, sample analysis by Mass Spec and nuclear magnetic resonance, data analysis and metabolite identification. After a metabolite identification, metabolites will be integrated in the metabolic context, and hypothesis will be generated for experimental validation. My presentation will cover each step of this workflow, starting from experimental design.

The multidisciplinary nature of metabolomics, is represented in this slide. I'm showing this slide because I believe that all these topics are important for conducting successful metabolomics experiment, starting from electronic engineering and signal processing, statistical physics, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, bio-statistics, and biochemistry and metabolism of course. Only by integrating and by having skills and know how on the different aspects of these fields, we'll be possible to perform good metabolomics experiment.

One of the reasons why metabolomics is so multidisciplinary, is because of the wide structural and chemical diversity of metabolites. In metabolomics or in metabolism, we will find extremely diverse chemical diversity of chemical structure. Here you have some examples of metabolites, ranging from different polarities and different chemical instabilities. This will determine the way we analyze these metabolites in a global scope. This is one reason why the experimental design is so important.
