Now, I'm going to introduce the main topic of this presentation that is the epidemiology of age-related hearing loss. It's important to remember that the estrogen are a protective finding. Women and men at the same age will present different auditory thresholds with women who preserve better auditory threshold at high frequency. Considering the general population, we can say that women will preserve their auditory function better and for longer than men.

The incidence prevalence of presbycusis is different in Europe and in the US. This is because it is related to genetic and environmental factors and even because in some parts of Europe, in particular in the Mediterranean area, the typical Mediterranean diet, it is a super protective factor. In Europe, we know that there is around 30% of male and 20% of female that have hearing loss of 30 decibels or more at 70 years. Then with the age increasing, the incidence in male becomes 55% and 45% in females. In Italy in particular, one individual in three over 60 years of age and nearly 60% over 85 years is affected by age-related hearing loss.
