The title of this
presentation is
Childhood Obesity: Implications
for Current and Future Health.
My name is Peter Katzmarzyk,
and I work at the Pennington
Biomedical Research Center
in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
I'm an epidemiologist of
physical activity and obesity,
and I work with large
cohort studies and
clinical interventions in
both children and in adults.

In this presentation, we
will provide information
on identifying overweight
and obesity in children,
we'll identify some factors
associated with
childhood obesity,
and then consider the
implications of obesity
for health both in childhood
and in the future.
Finally, I'll close
just with a couple of
clinical resources that
you might find useful.

This slide presents
an overarching model
of what I would like
to cover today.
You'll see that childhood
is on the bottom,
adulthood is on the top,
and there are arrows
between obesity and
health in both stages of life.
Starting in childhood,
we can readily
identify with this
that obesity is related to
health outcomes during
the childhood period.
Obesity also tracks
from childhood to
adulthood with that solid
arrow connecting them.
We also understand that
obesity is related
to health outcomes
during adulthood itself.
Finally, there's that
dotted line which links
childhood obesity to
adulthood health as there is
some evidence that obesity
itself per se may impact
future health
outcomes irrespective
of the obesity
status as an adult.
During today's presentation,
I'd like to walk you
through some of the evidence
supporting this model.
