I am Dr. Kelly Powell,
an assistant professor at
the Yale School of Medicine.
I am a Co-Director of the Toddler
Developmental Disabilities Program,
where we provide
interdisciplinary evaluations for
young children
suspected of having
autism or other
developmental delays.
In this talk, I
will be discussing
the diagnosis and
clinical management
of autism with an emphasis
on the implications
for young children.

I have no disclosures to report,
and I have received parental
permission for all of
the images and videos used
in this presentation.

Before I begin,
I encourage you to imagine
a family that you know.
Maybe it's you or someone
that you work with,
a friend, anybody really that
has a child with autism
that is expecting or just
recently had their second child.
What we hear from parents
time and time again
is that they worry about
the increased likelihood
their baby may also
develop autism.
They're often holding this
worry while also navigating
the complex systems of raising
a young child on the spectrum.

With those stories in mind,
as well as your own personal
experiences with families,
my plan for this
talk is as follows.
First, I will lay the groundwork
for the presentation by
further exploring
common symptoms
of autism in young children,
and we will watch a few videos.
Secondly, I will then
discuss the importance
of understanding
early communication and
language development in autism.
I will then review current
screening practices,
as well as the importance of
comprehensive assessment.
I will then discuss
evidence-based
treatments for young
children with autism.
Finally, I will review
some strategies to support
families who are navigating a first-time
diagnosis in their young child.
But first, symptoms of
autism in young children.
