Hello and thank you
for joining me.
My name is Pilar Orti,
and I'm the Director of
Virtual not Distant,
where I help managers
and their teams
embrace online
collaboration practices.
I'm also the host of the 21st
Century Work Life Podcast
where we talk about
online collaboration
and leading remote teams.
I'm also the co host of another
podcast, Management Café.

I have been working with
remote teams since 2016
and I have noticed
that while many teams
have embraced the medium
of online meetings,
they're having trouble adopting
other ways of communicating
mainly through asynchronous
communication.
That is why I've recorded
this talk for you.
In particular,
we're going to look
at using this kind
of communication
not just to help us
be more productive
and effective in
our collaboration,
but also to help us feel
more connected to
our colleagues.

First, we look at what we mean
by asynchronous communication,
what we mean by connection,
and the different
ways in which people
feel connected to
others at work.
We'll look at some
examples of practices
you can use to stay
connected in your team.
Finally, I have a couple
of next steps for you.

Let's start with a quick
look at how organizations
have adopted online
collaboration and remote work.
More and more teams
and organizations are
adopting some kind
of remote working,
whether it's fully
distributed companies
across the world,
or those working
with freelancers,
or teams who work
in the same city
but work from home.
Many organizations also
have hybrid teams,
a subset of remote,
where people work from both
the office and from home,
or from third places
like coffee shops
or co-working spaces.
The fact is that remote
work is all around us now.
It gives us flexibility.
It gives some of us a
sense of well being.
It provides the opportunities
for focused work.
However, there are risks
that come with this
way of working.
