Welcome to this lecture on inflammation, providing an overview of the essential functions and mechanisms of inflammation, highlighting its role in host defense, tissue repair, and homeostasis, as well as the distinguishing features of acute versus chronic inflammation. We will discuss the cellular and molecular processes involved, including the roles of innate immune cells and inflammatory mediators and review the typical clinical signs and important disease associations. Finally, we will consider current strategies for managing inflammation in clinical practice, aiming to balance protective effects with minimizing tissue damage and long term complications. Inflammation is a crucial biological response to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens or damaged cells. Its main purposes are to contain and eliminate injurious agents, initiate tissue repair, and restore homeostasis. While often linked to disease, inflammation is fundamental to immunity and tissue maintenance. The classic features, redinss, heat, swelling, pain, and loss of function reflect increased blood flow and mediator release. Excessive or dysregulated inflammation can cause tissue damage and underlie many diseases. Inflammation can be classified as acute or chronic, each with distinct features and outcomes. Acute inflammation is an immediate short term response to injury or infection with rapid onset, vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and neutrophil recruitment, aiming for pathogen clearance and tissue recovery.
