Hi, everyone. My name
is Dr. Tina Bhutani.
I'm a dermatologist practicing
in San Francisco, California.
I'm also the owner and CEO
of Synergy Dermatology and
an associate clinical
professor in
the Department of
Dermatology at UCSF.
Today I'm excited to
discuss psoriasis.
One of the most common
inflammatory diseases
that we see in dermatology.
Today we're going to focus on
the diagnosis and
overview of this disease.

When we talk about psoriasis,
we mainly say that it's
a clinical diagnosis meaning
we look at the skin,
we identify the patterns
of rash and we're
able to really
make the diagnosis
of psoriasis just
by looking at it.
We don't necessarily always
need a skin biopsy or
any confirmatory testing because
it does have classic appearance,
especially for classic plaque
psoriasis which we see here.
There are other rare variants
of psoriasis such as
generalized pustular psoriasis
and pomoplantar psoriasis,
which we'll go into
briefly today.
But they are much more rare.
Chronic plaque
psoriasis is by far
the most common type of
psoriasis and that's
what we'll focus on for
the majority of this talk.

Now, the worldwide prevalence of
psoriasis is
probably increasing,
but at this point are most
current estimate that
it's about 2% of the
worldwide population.
Interestingly, however,
in the US and Canada,
the prevalence is
probably higher at
about 4-5% and the prevalence
is actually less in places
like Africa and Asia.
But overall, the
average worldwide is
about 2% of the population
that lives with psoriasis.
That might not sound like a lot,
but when you think about it,
if you're in a room
of 100 people,
that means that
probably anywhere
2-5 of them have psoriasis.
That's a lot of people and
you've probably known people
even outside of your
clinical practice
who are living
with this disease.
Now, even though the
prevalence tends
