Hello, my name is John Wilding. I'm a professor of medicine at the University of Liverpool and a consultant physician at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool, where I spend some of my time looking after people with obesity and type 2 diabetes. I'm going to talk today about new standards in weight management.

So I will start with an outline. At the beginning, I'm going to set the scene and discuss how common obesity is and why it matters to healthcare professionals and society as a whole. We'll have a brief consideration of why there is an epidemic of obesity and how obesity leads to its complications to other diseases. Then we'll discuss what we can do about obesity, both prevention at a societal level and treatment at an individual level.

We can see that there are quite large areas of the world where more than 30% of the population are living with obesity and many other areas where the prevalence is above 20%. There are really very few parts of the world where obesity is rare. These data are, of course, for women, but we're seeing the same in men, and we're also seeing increasing rates of obesity in young people and children.

You can see here that nearly 30% of the UK population are living with obesity, and nearly 2 million have severe obesity as classified here as a body mass index above 40. These people would be eligible for treatment within specialist services or perhaps to have bariatric surgery. This has become such a problem over the last 20-30 years, as you can see from these slides. Why is this happening? Well, we know from this work
