Hello and welcome to our very first introductory talk for the series on opportunities and implications of digital transformation, business, development, and work in the digital age. I'm Anne-Laure Mention, professor of innovation and director of the Global Business Innovation Enabling Capability Platform at RMIT University, Australia.

Digital transformation is a major player in today's evolving society. Its pervasiveness is undeniable. There is significant evidence to show the impact of digital transformation on businesses, but also on humans and society. How businesses are affected by digital transformation is already well researched, experienced in practice, and documented. In particular, their challenges, successes, and to a lesser extent, their failures. The way we work, live our lives, and our human interactions have been significantly impacted by digital transformation and more evidently so in the current global crisis time. The challenges and opportunities provided by digital transformation at individual and social levels remain, however, less documented. With the pandemic, this has been gathering pace, and this series of talks aims to provide timely and topical insights on these overlooked aspects, discussing both the bright and the dark or darker side of this evolution. The advent of digital transformation comes along with the emergence of new industries, markets, and business models. The shift in ways of conducting business is affecting all industries and reshaping activities across the profit and not-for-profit sectors. The digital transformation is touted as a catalyst for a fairer and more sustainable society. Its potential as an enabler towards the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals is a source of hope, enablement, and empowerment as multiple illustrations evidence. The nature of work is rapidly changing as a response to increased automation, digitization, and digitalization. Policymakers, industry leaders, as well as education stakeholders recognize the profound changes and the subsequent need for upskilling, reskilling, and new foundations for lifelong learning. Arguably, the digital transformation is all about people, not so much about the technology itself. Digital transformation brings opportunities and challenges to all of us. How we can turn these challenges into opportunities and make sure these opportunities are fully capitalized on, will be important in the making of our future society and its social fabric. This series of talks will discuss these key issues.
