Interviewer: Today I'm interviewing Jacob Hanna, Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, and senior author of a paper in Cell, Tarazi et al 2022 185 1 to 17, titled: "Post-gastrulation synthetic embryos generated ex utero from mouse naive ESCs". Listeners are expected to have read at least the summary and discussion sections of this paper before listening to this interview. Professor Hanna, thank you for sparing the time for this interview. As I understand, the work represents an important stage in the development of a platform intended to be used, in the paper's words, "to interrogate early embryonic development biology from multiple species". Given that such a platform would have considerable utility, there is an obvious challenge. In the paper you state and then claim, "Synthetic whole embryoids are not identical to embryos. They may still be utilized in the future as an invaluable model for inaccessible time windows during early developmental embryology research".
