Good day everyone, I'm Dr. Kyra Leigh Sutton,
I'm a faculty member at Rutgers University of New Jersey, in the United States.
Welcome to 'From academics to corporate (and then back again to academics): a case study on finding the right career path'.
I began studying the transition of young adults into the workplace more than 12 years ago.
Something significant to me is for young adults to remember: you have agency over your career.
It means that your career choices matter, and you should select
opportunities that give you the best chance to learn and grow.
It also means that it's the responsibility of those like myself -
who have transitioned from school to work - to help the next generation.
This series is intended to fill that void, and lessen the uncertainty
young adults experience, as they transition to their first permanent roles.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas is an actress, singer and film producer.
Priyanka's memoir came out in January of 2021.
As soon as I heard the title, I knew it was a theme I'd incorporate into this session.
The title of her memoir is 'Unfinished', and it's a beautiful title
because it expresses exactly how I feel.
At this point in my career, I am unfinished.
There's a lot I want to accomplish, and I have a lot more to learn.
I like the title 'Unfinished', because you get to figure out what's important
for your career, and how to measure success.
For me, 2021 is an important year because it marks the 15th year
since I graduated from Ohio State with my PhD.
When I left Ohio State, I had no idea I would make three career pivots all
leading me back to a career in academics.
But here's the truth: I made a mistake early in my career,
that is, I didn't plan any long-term goals.
Instead, I just accepted jobs as they came along.
My advice to you is something I wish I would have done when I started my career;
that is, write out a five to ten-year plan, and refresh it each year.
Also, when you start a new job or even a new project, you must state your goals.
It's the only way that you'll guarantee that you'll benefit from the experience.
That is not meant to sound completely selfish, but as I get older,
I place a higher value on how time is spent.
During this presentation, I'll take you through my career journey so far,
and explain some of the experiences that shaped me.
I'll also share some lessons I've learned during my career journey,
some are related to work and some are related to life.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
