Good day everyone, this is Dr. Kyra Leigh Sutton.
I am a professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
I am excited to join you today to talk about everything related to
careers and want to make sure that you feel
that you have agency when you are making career choices,
and that you feel well-informed about the kinds of jobs that you want to start.
This is our first session in the 10 part series and I'm excited that you've joined us.

Welcome to our first session in the series entitled early career development,
young adults moving into permanent roles.
Our first session is intended to help job seekers,
figure out the roles you will be attracted to early in your career.
It's hard as you're transitioning into permanent roles because the stakesff are higher.
If we think about part-time roles and internships and apprenticeships,
the goal is usually focused on gaining broad work experience in generating income.
In comparison, when you transition to permanent roles,
you're seeking opportunities that are more closely related
to the work you want to do throughout your career.
Sometimes, it takes years and multiple positions to figure out what you want to do,
that was my experience.
As I look back over my career,
I consider some of the steps I should have taken to
facilitate finding my ideal jobs much sooner.
As such, this entire series was developed to help you figure out early on,
the steps that you can take to find an enjoyable career path.
Now notice, I don't focus on a single job,
ideally, throughout your career,
you will experience several jobs you enjoy and to which you can contribute,
hopefully, those jobs are linked to a career path.
When your career journey begins,
it's important to speak to people that work in the area you enjoy, even better.
These conversations are not high stakes,
that is, a decision to hire you will not be made.
Instead, the purpose of an informational interview is
a conversation to give you additional information related to specific jobs.
