Hi, my name is Kelly Cowan. I'm a professor at Miami University in Ohio. I'm going to speak to you about an extremely practical guide to using Just-in-Time teaching.

Often, we're introduced to new teaching techniques, but we really don't have any idea where to get started, that's why I'm giving you this practical guide. Just-in-Time teaching is a validated method for improving learning, but many instructors report not having the success that the technique promises. In this presentation, I'm going to share with you my mistakes and my experiences so that you and your students can reap the benefits of the technique. First, you see on the slide that you have to dive all the way in. You can't just stick your toe in the water of Just-in-Time teaching, and that's what I'm going to explain to you. You also see on the bottom of the slide my website, Kellycowan.org, I have a blog post that has the same instructions that I'm going to be sharing with you today. If you want to refer back to that, that where you go.

The study of pedagogy has matured a lot over the last 20 years, and really reached its pinnacle in my opinion in 2014 when this study was published in PNAS, 642 studies were considered in this research, 255 of them were chosen to be eligible. These are all hypothesis-driven studies of what works to improve student learning in science, engineering, and mathematics.
