Welcome to this lecture on pharmacodynamics versus pharmacokinetics, providing an overview of the fundamental concepts of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, which are essential in medicine and pharmaceutical research. We will examine the ADME processes, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion that determine what the body does to a drug. And discuss how drugs interact with molecular targets to produce therapeutic and side effects. The lecture will highlight the importance of integrating PK and PD, to optimize dosing, predict outcomes, and tailor therapies for individual patients. By understanding these principles, clinicians can ensure safe and effective medication use. We will explore two fundamental concepts in clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Understanding these terms is essential for medicine and pharmaceutical research. Pharmacokinetics or PK describes what the body does to the drug, examining absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, the ADME processes. In contrast, pharmacodynamics or PD is concerned with what the drug does to the body, including its effects and mechanisms of action. These areas are key to rationally prescribing medicines and optimizing therapy. Examining pharmacokinetics, a drug's journey through the body is divided into absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, ADME. Absorption is how a drug enters the bloodstream through oral, intravenous or other routes.
