Welcome to this lecture on large intestine and water reabsorption, providing an overview of the structure and primary segments of the large intestine, its unique features compared to the small intestine and its essential roles in water and electrolyte absorption. We will discuss the importance of microbial activity in the colon, including fermentation of dietary fiber and vitamin synthesis. Key processes driving feces formation, hormonal regulation, and the significance of slow content transit will be explained. Finally, we will consider how disruptions to these functions can lead to conditions such as diarrhea and constipation, emphasizing the colon's role in maintaining fluid balance and health. Let's begin with the structure of the large intestine, the final section of the gastrointestinal tract. In adults, it measures about 1.5 meters and is divided into the scum, colon, rectum, and anal canal. The colon includes ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid segments. Unlike the small intestine, it lacks ville and instead has a smooth mucosal surface and many glands lined by goblet cells which secrete mucus. Its key roles include absorbing water, hosting microbes, and forming and storing feces. A primary role of the colon is to reclaim water and electrolytes from material that has escaped absorption in the small intestine. As chyme enters the scum, it is fairly liquid, but by the time it reaches the rectum, most of the water up to 1.5 liters daily, has been reabsorbed.
