Good day, everybody.
It's a great pleasure
to speak to you today
about living with
congenital heart disease.
My name is Jolien
Roos-Hesselink.
I'm a cardiologist at
Erasmus MC Rotterdam,
The Netherlands.

Congenital heart
malformations form 28% of
all congenital malformations
and with that are
the most prevalent congenital
malformations that occur.
The estimates of birth prevalence
show great variability.
But generally it's
accepted it's about
8 per 1000 live-born babies.
If you want to make that
a very simple quote,
I would say just say one
in hundred children is
born with congenital
heart disease.

In the last century,
major breakthroughs
in diagnostics and
management have occurred.
I think we all know
that, for instance,
the imaging techniques
have improved
echocardiography,
new techniques,
but also MRI and CT now
have improved dramatically,
and therefore, many more
diagnoses can be made
and also can be made correctly.
But also in the treatment
enormous breakthroughs
have occurred.
I think the introduction
of the heart-lung machine,
making it possible to
operate on small children,
I think that is one of
the major breakthroughs in
medicine in the past century.
Our surgeons have
started from scratch
and they have done
fantastic work.
