Now in this lecture,
I want to focus on
one very important part
of your role as manager.
That's keeping your people well
and protecting
them from burnout.
We're going to cover
what burnout is,
how you can recognize
it in your team,
the ongoing link
with uncertainty,
and what you can do
about it as a leader.
This is a really big topic
for so many people right now.
We're going to really try
to understand what it is
and that crucial step
of what your role is
in recognising and
supporting it.

Let's start with a
definition of burnout.
Actually, burnout
was defined back in
the 1970s by a psychologist
called Herbert Fredenberger.
It has been around for
quite some time but
most recently, the most
official definition of burnout
came from the WHO in 2019.
They defined burnout as
a work-related condition
characterized by feelings of
energy depletion or exhaustion,
detachment or distance
from the job,
feelings of negativism or
cynicism related to one's job,
and reduced productivity.
As you can see, it's very much
defined in the work context.
One of the things we're
going to talk about today,
is how the boundaries
between work and life
have become so blurred
particularly in the last
three to four years
that actually burn out pervades
all aspects of our lives.
After the pandemic when
people were living in
a constant state of, am I safe?
Where the brain has
a very low level
fight-or-flight response
activated at all times.
This aspect would
have caused all of
these feelings and so for sure,
people were feeling burnt
out during that time.
What's quite interesting is that
burnout figures are still rising.
