Hello, my name is Anne Daguerre. I'm a reader at the School of Business and Law at the University of Brighton. The subject of the lecture today is finding the right mix of business research methodologies.

The lecture is organized as follows. First, I'll be talking about what are mixed methods, providing definitions. Second, the most common designs. I'll be also talking in a third point about the relative importance of quantitative versus qualitative research designs. Forth, why use mixed methods in business research? Fifth, applying mixed methods to case study research. Sixth, the case study itself, which is about workload and mental health among academics in UK universities, a case study of Newcastle University. Definitions. Mixed methods research is formally defined as a class of research where the researcher mixes or combines quantitative and qualitative research techniques, methods, approaches, concepts or language into a single study.

What are mixed methods? Essentially in mixed methods, quantitative and qualitative techniques and methods are combined within a single research project. Mixed methods entail the collection and analysis of both quantitative data expressed in numbers and qualitative data, typically expressed in words and text. Qualitative data would be interview data, a focus group data, observation data. Quantitative data will be survey data.
