Welcome to this lecture on logistics. Logistics is both an art and a science, focused on managing three main constraints, time, physical space, and location. Every organization relies on logistics to keep operations moving. Whether goods or services are sent across town or continents, logistics ensures seven things are right, item, quantity, condition, customer time, location, and price. Logistics manages resource flow. While supply chain management handles organizational relationships, both are essential. Without logistics supply chain stall, Logistics isn't just about moving finished products. It also covers the movement of raw materials, subassemblies, tangible goods and people, including operators, passengers, and service providers. Modern logistics manages flows of intangible items, too, like data, financial capital, and intellectual property. Across industries, logistics extends beyond factories and warehouses to include tracking items, coordinating information flows, and supporting global supply chains through integrated physical, digital and financial infrastructures. Successful logistics requires thoughtful design of layouts and operational processes in spaces like retail stores, warehouses, hospitals, campuses, and city road networks. Layouts must balance business goals, maximizing equipment use, smooth flow of goods and people, safety, employee morale, and customer satisfaction.
