Welcome to this lecture on anemia, providing an overview of the definition and global significance of anemia, highlighting its causes and major risk groups. We will review the main types and underlying mechanisms of anemia, including iron deficiency and other nutritional or chronic disease origins. Anemia is a condition marked by a reduction in the number or quality of red blood cells or decreased hemoglobin concentration. Hemoglobin, the iron rich protein in red blood cells, binds oxygen and carries it from the lungs to tissues. When there are not enough red blood cells or hemoglobin, tissues get less oxygen, leading to fatigue and weakness. Anemia is highly prevalent globally, especially among women of reproductive age and young children, making it a major public health issue. Anemia is not a single disease, but a manifestation of many underlying conditions. The most common type globally is iron deficiency anemia, often caused by chronic blood loss, such as from heavy periods, gastrointestinal bleeding or poor diet. Anemia can also result from poor production of red blood cells in the bone marrow, as seen with vitamin B 12 or folate deficiencies, chronic illness or genetic disorders.
