Primary headache disorders, in particular migraine, are a common cause of disability worldwide. They're associated with higher rates of mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression, and reduced economic productivity, which negatively impacts the gross domestic product on a national scale. In 2016, almost 3 billion people worldwide were estimated to have migraine or tension-type headache, 1.89 billion with tension-type headache and 1.04 billion with migraine.

Through the Global Burden of Disease study, we have a better understanding of the scale and impact of headache disorders worldwide. The Global Burden of Disease study, which I'll refer to as GBD from now on, is a worldwide collaboration currently led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, which is part of the University of Seattle. It aims to quantify health loss due to different diseases and injuries across places and over time. It's been performed periodically since 1990, with the latest iteration being in 2019. In this presentation, we'll talk about the gross worldwide statistics of headache disorders and then break down into region-by-region analyses of the prevalence of headache disorders and the burden attributable to them.
