In this session today,
we will be discussing the
topic of data literacy.
My name is Jennifer Stirrup,
and I have been in
the data industry
for over two decades.
I'm excited to share this
information with you,
it is fundamental
to every business
and it's something that
every business, and
everyone who deals with data
should be thinking about.

We're going to look at
an introductory view
of data literacy.
We're also going to have a
look at why it's important
and we will look at a
case study of Google.
There's a lot of really
great practice at Google
and I hope that this
will help to inform and
educate you about
your own practices
in your organisation.
We will end with a view
and looking forward
and how you can get
started in data literacy.

Let's take a look at
definitions of data literacy.
It's important to understand
exactly what that means.
1:02
Here we see a definition
of data literacy.
Data literacy is
defined as a term
used to describe an
individual's ability to read,
understand, and utilise
data in different ways.
This definition
is given to us by
Tim Stobierski who works at
the Harvard Business School.
Data literacy is a term
which many people use,
but actually they
often misuse it.
Data literacy in business is
not just about
understanding the data.
It's really a broad
skill set that
goes beyond traditional
data analysis.
It involves looking at
different types of data and
recognising and applying
the insights in
various contexts.
To be data literate,
we don't need to be
a data scientist.
Also, we do not
need IT expertise.
It's a skill that should be
pervasive throughout
the whole business.
It's also a very
transferable skill.
There should be an ease of
learning and applying
data literacy,
and that should really help
everyone to adopt this skill.
Data literacy is highly
significant in
today's businesses.
Data empowers employees
across all levels in
an organisation to contribute
to becoming a
data-driven business.
Data literacy is a key skill for
businesses that want to move
forward to become
more data-driven.
What does data literacy
actually give to businesses?
