Hello, everyone. My name is Dr. Joiselle Cunningham Smith,
and today's session is called How Businesses Can Better Support Young People of Color.
I'd like to start off by introducing myself.
0:15
My training is from the Harvard Graduate School of Education,
and my current academic research is really centered on the uplift of people of color,
women and other under-served populations.
I think deeply about how businesses, higher institutions,
kindergarten through 12, primary and secondary systems here in the United States.
And how our work cultures can better support
under-served populations in their transitions to career,
and also to really realizing their potential in the world of work.
I saw a lot of disparity as a young person myself.
I'm from the Bronx and Teaneck,
New Jersey, which is a suburb outside of Manhattan.
I saw incredible disparity between low income and middle-income people during that time.
I also saw young people access and unlocking their dreams in untraditional models,
and using really a lot of compelling ways of convincing adults in their lives
and working with different institutions to really become
champions for the work that they wanted to do in the world.
My intention today is to lift up some of the strategies,
and the lesser known paths that may lead to greater success for young people,
and other populations that need additional support
in order to thrive in their future careers,
and really to thrive in the dreams and aspirations that they've had for themselves.
Today I'll share some of the research lessons that I've learned along the way.
