Hello. My name is Kwabena Duedu.
I'm a professor at
Birmingham City University.
This is the second part
of a two-part
introduction to fungi.
The first part covered
the general
characteristics of fungi,
and in this second
part, I'm going to
dwell mostly on fungal diseases.

We're going to cover the
main classifications
of fungal diseases: superficial,
cutaneous, subcutaneous,
and systemic mycosis,
and we're going to end
with a general overview of
anti-fungal chemotherapy
and resistance.

Let's talk about the
classification of fungal diseases.

In our previous session,
I mentioned that
humans or animals;
we do have some natural
barriers that protect us
against infections and
invading microbes.
Fungi sometimes do pass
the resistant barriers of
the human body and
establish infections.
Some of these resistant
barriers will
include mucosal surfaces
and skin, among others.
Fungal-associated
diseases are on the rise,
and these are due to nosocomial
and opportunistic infections,
which usually occur
in people with HIV,
diabetes, lupus, and
transplant patients.
Fungi generally are
slow-growing, and hence,
mycoses are generally
long-lasting and chronic.
Fungi also cause
allergic reactions and
intoxication in humans
through toxins that they
produce in the course
of their growth or
their life cycle.
