Dee Carter is an Associate Professor in Microbiology at the University of Sydney, Australia. Her interest in using molecular markers to investigate the secret life histories of fungi began during her PhD studies at Imperial College, London, where she worked on Phytophthora infestans, the cause of potato blight, and continued... read moreduring her postdoctoral work at UC Berkeley, where she first began working on medically important fungi. Since coming to Australia she has focused on the pathogenic yeast Cryptococcus, particularly C. gattii, which occurs on some species of native gum trees and infects humans and other animals, especially koalas. Understanding how the ecology of C. gattii in its natural environment determines the eventual infection of people and animals is a major focus of her research work.
