Randolph Nesse is widely recognized as a founder of the field of evolutionary medicine. As a physician and Professor on the faculty at the University of Michigan School of Medicine for 40 years, he collaborated with the biologist George Williams on several seminal publications that inspired many to undertake new... read morestudies on why natural selection leaves bodies vulnerable to diseases. In 2014 he moved to Arizona State University to start a new Centre for Evolutionary Medicine. More recently he has returned to his roots as a psychiatrist to develop the field of evolutionary psychiatry as a subfield of evolutionary medicine. Among many honours, he is an Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Distinguished Lifetime Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
