Welcome to this session
on developing leaders and
leadership understanding
developmental processes.
My name is David Day
and I've been involved
in leadership research
and practice for about 25 years.
One of the things that has
struck me is while
there's a lot of
attention paid to
leadership theories
and testing different
approaches to leadership,
what organizations really care
about is developing leaders
and developing leadership.
One of the things that we'll be
discussing today
is the difference
between those two factors of
developing leaders and
developing leadership.

This is a summary agenda for
the presentation I will
be providing to you.
We'll start with some
overarching definitions of
leader development
and leadership
development, how they differ.
Also relatedly, differences
between human capital
and social capital,
and how they relate to
the different forms
of development.
We'll then turn our
attention to some of
the content of
leader development,
looking at what develops as
part of leader development.
Then, I'll review some issues
around the process. That is
what are the kinds of processes
that are thought
to take place as
people develop as leaders or as
leadership develops in
broader collectives.
I'll also review some
methods that are
commonly used to
develop leaders and
then we'll turn our attention
to leadership development and
the topic about enhancing
leadership capacity
in collectives,
whether those
collectives be groups or
teams or larger organizations.
Finally, we will wrap up with
a look to state of the
art practice around
integrating leader
development with
leadership development in
organizational
developmental systems.
There are some general
objectives for the presentation.
