Imagine two entrepreneurs,
Sarah who finds joy and
fulfillment in her startup,
and Mike, who can't sleep
because he's constantly
thinking about his business.
Both are passionate
entrepreneurs,
but their experiences of
their ventures are
vastly different.
Welcome. I'm Dr.
Rosemary Fisher from
Swinburne University
of Technology
in Melbourne, Australia.
Today, we're going to explore
the dualistic nature of
entrepreneurial passion.
0:30
We've all heard stories of
passionate entrepreneurs
who've changed the world.
Think of media entrepreneur
Oprah Winfrey,
Narayana Murthy from Infosys,
Akio Morita, Founder of Sony,
and Olivia Lum,
Founder of Hyflux,
but what exactly is
entrepreneurial passion
and why does it matter?
0:51
Entrepreneurial
passion is defined
as motivating, energizing,
enabling positive
emotions derived
from and stimulated by
engagement in the venture.
It's not just a
fleeting emotion.
It's a driving
force that propels
entrepreneurs forward even in
the face of daunting challenges.
In this talk, we will
look at how passion,
while crucial for success,
can manifest in ways
that either enhance or hinder
the entrepreneur's journey.

Passion has long been hailed as
a secret source of
entrepreneurial success.
It's that fire in the belly that
drives entrepreneurs to
persevere through challenges.
But is all passion
created equal?
Passionate entrepreneurship
is more than
just enthusiasm for
a business idea.
It's a fundamental energy that
transforms how entrepreneurs
view their ventures.
Instead of seeing
their business as
mere work or a task to be done,
passionate entrepreneurs view it
as something that
they truly love.
This passion serves as a
powerful facilitator, helping
entrepreneurs navigate
the difficulties
and less enjoyable aspects
of running a business.
As one entrepreneur
in my study put it,
if I didn't have the passion,
I can guarantee I would
not be in business today,
but passion and
entrepreneurship isn't
a single uniform concept, and
recent research has
revealed that it really has
a dualistic nature which brings
us to the dualistic
model of passion.
The dualistic model of passion
