My name is Evangelia Marinakou,
and I'm a Principal Academic at
Bournemouth University
Business School,
with specialization in hospitality
and tourism management.
Today I'm going to talk
about talent management,
and a lot of information that
is included in this
lecture comes from
evidence that we collected
from a funded project from
Bournemouth University,
back in 2018,
to study talent management
strategies and retention for
employees within the hospitality
and tourism industry.
Actually, we explored and
we had interviews
and a survey with
people working in the
industry in the US,
the UK, Australia, and Greece.
We collected a lot
of information that
is very relevant to
today's lecture.

Today's lecture will include
an introduction to talent,
then we will try to give
a definition of talent.
We will also talk about
talent management and
the strategies that
are proposed within
the literature.
We'll see a couple of examples
from Hyatt and Hilton,
and then we will talk
about best practice,
and of course, how we can
measure talent because
we want to see whether
talent management
is effective within
the hospitality and
tourism industry,
and provide some
recommendations on
how tourism and
hospitality managers can
implement those best practices.

What is talent?
How do people understand talent?
1:38
Talent is a strategic
resource for
the competitiveness
of organizations,
and it is seen as a way to
gain and maintain the
competitive advantage.
Now, within this lecture,
we will consider talent as
the employee who thinks
outside the box and
can make decisions,
has knowledge and
expertise in his/her area,
is willing to learn and
progress in his/her career,
is adaptable to various
circumstances with
a customer-driven
personality and fits
the organizational culture.
What is interesting is that
there is a range of
issues considered in
the conceptualization of talent.
Two main approaches have
been developed to define talent.
The first refers to
the debate based on
the nature and
nurture debate about
whether talent is
inborn and innate.
Whereas others claim that
talent can be nurtured with
proper training and development.
