Hello, I'm Letizia Mortara,
I'm an Associate Professor at
the University of Cambridge
in the Department
of Engineering.
Today, I will cover
a topic that is very
dear to me because it's
what I used to do research.
It is the way in
which I practice
an engaged scholarship
approach to
develop techniques and
approaches that help Industry.
0:25
I will go over two things
after a brief introduction
to our institute,
which is called the Institute
for Manufacturing or IFM.
I will delve into the
heartbeat of the story,
which is about how complex
challenges faced by
industry are tackled by
research through the
engaged scholarship.
I will try to show
you an example
of how this is achieved
by a method for
research that is based
substantially on
collaboration between
academia and industry.
A particular focus
will be given to
an example whereby
we have organized
a platform that supports
engaged scholarship to develop
approaches for managers,
particularly, those
managers that have
strategic technology
and innovation
management decisions to take.

The Institute for
Manufacturing or IFM
is one of the 6 divisions of
the Department of Engineering,
here in Cambridge.
We've been set up
with one goal and only
one goal in mind.
We want to manufacture
a better word.
We think of this mission
holistically while we
support the formative
curricula of young engineers.
We at the same
time, try to tackle
research problems that are
affecting manufacturing,
try to derive practical
solutions based
on theoretical
understanding of phenomena.
This means that we cover
manufacturing broadly
from problems related
to how to design
and produce, and
commercialize safe and
sustainable products.
How to support skills and
economic development that
will get us towards
a more sustainable and
resilient society.
We delivered this understanding
back to industry
and policymakers,
and our view of manufacturing
is multifaceted.
We overall, cover a rather
broad spectrum of problems.
