Hello there, and welcome to the first in the series of Henry Stewart talks on the emotional intelligence. My name is Sunny Faronbi, and I'm a certified emotional intelligence coach, speaker, and seminar leader. Emotional intelligence is an area that I'm very passionate about because of its potential to radically transform leadership and to change people's lives. I know that for a fact because it has changed mine and a few other people that I know of. My background is a very technical one. As an engineer and a project manager for more than two decades, my approach to everything was very analytical. So it wasn't until when I began to develop emotional intelligence skills that my career and my leadership were transformed. This is the reason that I have so much passion for this topic.

Now here's a quick overview of what this session is about. We will define emotional intelligence, what it is, and what it's not. Next, we will look at who we are, what we've learned, and how these two come together to determine how we tend to see things. Then I'll briefly summarize and describe the impact of this on your success as a leader.

So before we begin, let me quickly say that during this series, you may hear two acronyms being used interchangeably. EI stands for emotional intelligence and EQ is for emotional quotient, which is how you measure emotional intelligence. In other words, EQ is the measure of EI. Over the last few years, however, EQ has frequently been used by many people in place of EI. So when you hear EQ, people are actually saying emotional intelligence and not emotional quotient, and this is how I'm going to be using it in this session. So when I say EQ, I actually mean emotional intelligence. In other sessions within this series, you will hear some speakers use the term EI instead of EQ. We're saying the same thing. So I don't want you to be confused over that.
