Hello and welcome to this talk on "Employability and First-Line Managers".
My name is John Neugebauer,
and why should I be speaking to you today?
I've managed very many selection processes through to senior executive roles,
and I've researched and taught on international career and management programs.
After my first career in the UK National Health Service,
I've worked in international banking human resource management,
and held senior positions in human resources in the UK.
Later, I had a teaching career with post-graduates and management consulting,
and I've been a manager and I've trained people in management too.
But perhaps most important of all,
I do know how it feels to be selected and rejected.
I've written two books on work,
first on placements and internships,
and the second which was on employability.
Today's talk is based on the book on employability.
So, what is the hardest part of working life?
As this psychology graduate from Amsterdam in the Netherlands reminds us,
the hardest part is getting a job,
getting the right job and then managing you career direction.
This needs more than qualifications and luck.
In this talk, we will discuss how you can make the most of your own employability,
and also support those who work for you.
So, the aims of this talk are as follows.
First, we will look at what we mean by the term employability.
Second, we'll think about employability from
your own personal perspectives and colleague employability,
which affects your role as first-line managers.
We'll consider managing employability and towards the end,
I'll give you some tips and advice,
and ask you to prepare your own action plans.
